(Alexandria, VA) -
The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) commends
Chief Nathan Harper and the Pittsburgh Police Department for its swift
actions in investigating claims made by Ashley Todd, a 20-year old college
student from Texas. Todd claimed that a 6-foot-4 black man robbed her, attacked
her and carved a backwards "B" on her face because she had a
McCain-Palin bumper sticker on her car. During the course of the investigation,
she admitted that her claims were false.
"The Pittsburgh Police Department did an outstanding job of investigating
this sensitive case and bringing this matter to close in an efficient manner.
Because of their professionalism and skill, the Department was able to uncover
the facts of the situation, leading to Ms. Todd admitting that her allegations
were false," said Joseph McMillan, NOBLE National President. "The
investigation of this false allegation consumed valuable resources, and anyone
predisposed to making such false allegations should be held accountable for
baseless actions."
Contined McMillan: "As we recently witnessed in the assassination plot
uncovered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, law
enforcement resources can not be squandered and are needed to meet a variety of
needs. The potential stakes are too high for efforts to be improperly
diverted."
