During these troubled economic times, with unemployment rates soaring as high as 28% by some estimates in the District of Columbia’s Ward 8 community, and philanthropic giving and distribution of holiday turkeys and other services at an all time low in many challenged communities, organization leaders of the DC Chapter of NOBLE and ROOT, Inc., contacted DC Councilmember Marion Barry, inviting him to join with community leaders and residents of the Cedar Heights community to distribute turkeys and serve dinner to families in that community who have been hard hit by the nation’s economic downturn.

In recent years, the Cedar Heights community has been ravaged by crime, including gun violence, youth gang violence, drug sales and other felony offenses.  ROOT is proud to have worked successfully with the William C. Smith Company and residents of the Cedar Heights community to help make a miracle and transform that neighborhood into one of the safest in the city - where acts of violence - especially by and against youth, are virtually nonexistent, and where there hasn’t been a single incident of gun violence in two years.

The Washington, DC Metropolitan Area Chapter of NOBLE, ROOT Inc., and Councilmember Barry wish to express their appreciation of the Cedar Heights community and its residents for coming together and working with ROOT, the William C. Smith Company – and others - to make their community safer and more viable.   This special Thanksgiving event is also made possible through the valued support of ANC Commissioner Lendia Johnson, Bank of America, DC Council Chairman, Hon. Vincent Gray and Council Members Kwame Brown and Michael Brown.
