The City of Santa Monica is seeking a visionary and innovative leader for the position of Chief of Police to join our organization.  The new Chief will be a progressive and committed leader as well as a masterful communicator.

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills who can balance a variety of competing interests at the same time. The successful candidate will be politically astute with an ability to quickly grasp and understand these competing interests within the Santa Monica community. The incoming chief must be proactive and adept at identifying public safety issues that emphasize prevention rather than reactive policing methods.

Collaborative problem solving skills are a must for the next chief to be successful. The chief must be adept at coordinating and integrating the efforts of various work groups among the command staff. Challenging decisions are made within the department, the city structure and throughout the community utilizing a collaborative problem solving approach and this is expected to continue with the new chief. He/she needs to be comfortable in assuming an active role in group problem solving efforts as a member of the City’s executive management team. In addition, he/she will have the ability to delegate and guide both sworn and civilian personnel within the department when working through solutions. Succession planning and organizational development are highly valued in the City of Santa Monica and it is expected that the chief will provide mentoring and professional development opportunities for all staff.

Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or a closely related field is required.  A Masters’ Degree is desired.  Competitive candidates will have broad and extensive proficiency in all major phases of municipal police work with a minimum of five years of progressive experience in a highly responsible executive management level position.  Experience must have been within a law enforcement agency in a diverse metropolitan setting similar to Santa Monica

Salary:  $214,884 to $265,284/year, plus quarterly management incentive pay.
