The City of Fayetteville is seeking candidates for the position of Police Chief.  With a diverse population of 208,000, Fayetteville has grown to be the sixth largest city in North Carolina.  Founded in 1762, the city is known for its family-friendly atmosphere. The city includes an historic downtown shopping area, numerous historic sites, seven museums, three colleges and universities, multiple entertainment venues, and award-winning golf courses.  Fayetteville is home to Fort Bragg, the Army’s headquarters for Airborne and Special Operations forces and Pope Army Air Field.  Located in south central North Carolina on Interstate 95 midway between New York and Florida, the city is home to Fayetteville Regional Airport, making it accessible from many locations.  In 2011, Fayetteville was an All-America City Award winner, significantly for the third time in the history of this prestigious Award.

The City of Fayetteville is organized under the Council/Manager form of government.  The Fayetteville Police Department has 545 employees (383 sworn) and a budget of $43 million.  The department has been accredited by CALEA for over 22 years.  The new chief will have the opportunity to provide leadership for an outstanding police organization, while instilling a high degree of public trust in the department.  As a part of the city’s senior management team, the chief works collaboratively with other department directors and the City Manager’s Office to ensure seamless delivery of high quality services for all citizens.  Go to http://www.bethebadge.com/ to view the police department’s website including the 2010 PERF operational study and the community wellness plan.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.  A graduate degree is preferred.   Ten years of broad and extensive supervisory experience in municipal police work, including at least three years in an administrative capacity, are required.  Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A track record of successfully implementing professional standards that result in departmental efficiency, integrity, and public confidence, combined with experience developing police/community relationships, is ideal.

The Police Chief is selected by and reports to the City Manager, Dale Iman, who has served in this capacity since 2006.  Salary range is from $110,000 to $140,000.  The City offers an excellent benefits package.

To apply, send a cover letter and resume summarizing your qualifications, along with the names of five professional references by March 15, 2012 to:
