Florida A&M University (FAMU; www.famu.edu) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director, Safety & Security. An 1890 land-grant institution, FAMU is a part of the State University System of Florida and is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 2012, FAMU was ranked No. 1 of the public historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the U.S. News and World Report college ranking for HBCUs. FAMU enrolls nearly 12,000 students from the United States and more than 70 countries across its 14 schools and colleges and one institute. FAMU’s Department of Public Safety is a full-service law enforcement agency providing safety, security, enforcement and parking services to the university community. Distinguished by lush foliage and massive oaks, FAMU’s main campus in Tallahassee comprises 156 buildings spread over 422 acres. A satellite safety and security unit is housed within the College of Law in Orlando.

The Director serves as the chief law enforcement officer for the campus and has overall responsibility for budget, human resource management, and priority setting for campus security, including short- and long-range emergency plans. A significant responsibility for this individual, in conjunction with other FAMU leaders, will be to assist with the on-going rebuilding of the University as a safe, secure and welcoming campus environment for all of FAMU’s constituents and visitors. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director will be relied on to implement the best practices in the field of public safety at FAMU as well as introduce other new measures that will safeguard the entire university community.

The Director must have a successful track record of providing broad leadership, including planning, organizing, supervising and establishing goals and objectives. Other desired expertise is in the development and evaluation of a broad dissemination of policies, statutes, trainings and workshops, as well as the possession of extensive knowledge of the statutory provisions that govern law enforcement operations. An important qualification will be demonstrated experience to work independently and effectively with a diverse student body, administration, faculty and staff. The successful candidate will serve as the liaison with local, state and federal criminal justice organizations.

Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six years as a law enforcement administrator in the position of Assistant Chief or higher, or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and eight years as a law enforcement administrator in the position of Assistant Chief or higher.

This position is a full-time, 12-month administrative professional role. To ensure full consideration, application materials (including cover letter, resume, and contact information for at least three professional references) should be received by July 31, 2012. Interviews may take place before closing date; however, a final decision will not be made until after July 31, 2012. Applications should be submitted to:
