The nationally
accredited Virginia Tech Police Department is seeking candidates for the
position of Deputy Chief. This position reports directly to the Chief of
Police. The Deputy Chief assists in providing leadership, strategic
planning, and administrative direction for the campus Police Department and
the VT Rescue Squad. This position manages the daily operations of a
proactive Police Department in a diverse community. The department provides
to the campus community a full range of police services including vehicle
patrol, bicycle patrol, foot patrol, traffic law enforcement, traffic crash
investigations, criminal investigations, dignitary protection, and crowd
control for various events. A variety of educational and training services
are also provided to the campus community. The Deputy Chief works closely
with all university units to ensure a safe and secure educational and work
environment for students, faculty/staff, and visitors. In order to carry
out these responsibilities, the Deputy Chief must have an excellent working
relationship with the central administrative offices as well as the support
functions of the university. The Deputy Chief must maintain excellent
working relationships with local law enforcement agencies.
Primary responsibilities of the position include:
-ensures the prevention and reduction of crime and disorder on the
university campus through the provision of 24/7 police protection and clear
accountability standards
-ensures the high-risk incidents, highly sensitive situations, and
suspicious/criminal activities are managed appropriately
-may assist with threat assessment and workplace violence management
responsibilities
-ensures the appropriate and cost-effective delivery of police operations
by serving as a senior member of the command staff.

Required Qualifications
Candidates should be
certified by a federal or state law enforcement agency; advanced degree or
training and work experience that equates to an advanced degree;
demonstrated relevant command experience; demonstrated ability to organize,
supervise, train, motivate and evaluate assigned staff; ability to assess
law enforcement or other hazardous situations and determine an appropriate
course of action along with maintaining a calm, courteous, objective, and
conscientious attitude in all situations; must be an accomplished
professional who possesses strong communication skills and has the capacity
for analytical thinking and problem-solving; demonstrated personal
characteristics that ensure effective working relationships with all
segments of the university and the public, including a commitment to
meeting the needs of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the student, employee, and community
populations; and demonstrated experience in working with diverse constituencies
is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
Campus law
enforcement experience and knowledge of national accreditation standards
are helpful; experience with threat assessment management; familiarization
with Emergency Medical Services; completion of a law enforcement management
program or an advanced degree in a related field.
