This is an exceptional opportunity to provide leadership within a progressive, nationally recognized metropolitan area. Cedar Rapids is the second largest community in Iowa and an economic hub for the state, anchoring the Interstate 380 Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Cultural Corridor of Linn, Benton, Jones, Johnson and Washington counties.  The estimated population of the three-county MSA, which includes the nearby cities of Marion and Hiawatha, was 256,324 in 2008. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Cedar Rapids’ accounts for roughly half of the MSA’s population with growth rates exceeding 8% since 2000.

Cedar Rapids is a full-service municipal government and offers one of the most progressive city governments in the United States. Cedar Rapids has been operating under the council-manager form of government since January of 2006.

The Police Chief reports directly to the City Manager and leads a department of 203 sworn personnel, 24 non-sworn employees, 9 Animal Control and 27 Dispatch personnel. The annual operating budget for the department is $30.2 million. The department operates from a state of the art law enforcement facility. Under the general direction of the City Manager, the Chief of Police provides leadership, management and oversight for the overall operation and activities of the Police Department.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 15 years of related work experience in law enforcement; be at the rank of Captain or in some instances the rank of Lieutenant; will have graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree preferred; and will be able to obtain Iowa Police Officer Certification within 120 days of being hired. Salary range is $101,129.60 to $139,048.00 depending on experience and qualifications. An excellent fringe benefit package will also be provided.
