$20.91 - $20.91 Hourly
$43,500.00 - $43,500.00 Annually

NATURE OF WORK:

This is recruit trainee work in the Police Department intended to result in promotion to the Police Officer classification.

Grand Rapids Police Officers respond to emergency calls for service on a 24-hour a day basis. These positions perform duties that deter crime, respond to citizen calls for service, protects property, and resolves conflicts between different people. Officers interact with the public on a daily basis.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a Michigan's Driver's license by date of hire.

Must have a high school diploma or GED.

Some experience involving communicating with people under varying circumstances.

Candidates for positions in this class are required to meet initial employment requirements as established by the Civil Service Board.


OTHER NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • United States Citizenship
  • Applicant may be denied a license for the disqualifying offenses described in the accompanying comments: judgment of verdict of guilt; judgement or verdict of guilt but mentally ill; plea of guilty; plea of nolo contendere; an order delaying sentence; probation under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act; probation for first-time drug offenses under MCL 333.7411; and probation for first-time domestic violence offense under MCL 769.4a (Felony adjudications, Felony expungements, or Felony set aside under Michigan Law or substantially corresponding laws of another jurisdiction. Adjudications of guilt for violations or attempted violations of: A penal law punishable of more than 1 year; or Operating while intoxicated/drugged, 2nd Offense within 7 years; Misdemeanor possession of drugs [except marijuana] and Misdemeanor Use of Drugs; 2nd Offense Domestic Violence; Assault and Battery 1 year and First Offense Domestic Violence 1 year; Misdemeanor Stalking)
  • Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation covering school and employment records, home environment, and personal traits and integrity. (Arrests and expunged convictions, all previous law violations and personal protection orders).
  • Possess a valid operators or chauffeur's license (all 50 states, DC, territories of the US and Canada – May not be in a state of suspension or revocation)
  • Pass MCOLES Reading and Writing Exam
  • Pass MCOLES Physical Fitness pre-employment examinations within 180 days of starting a Police Academy
  • Other MCOLES minimum requirements reference the following standards: Physical Ability, Hearing standards, Psychological Fitness, Vision/Color standards, Training requirements, Licensing Exam, Fingerprinting, Oral Interview and drug testing

This recruitment process is for the selection of candidates to be hired by the City of Grand Rapids in April 2018, at which time selected candidates will be sponsored to attend a designated Police Academy. The Police Academy starts on April 30, 2018 and concludes with graduation on August 16, 2018. You must be available for that entire training academy and pass the MCOLES State Licensing Exam for Police Officers at the end of the academy.

If selected, you will be a paid City of Grand Rapids Police Department employee from the start of the Academy in April 2018 with the expectation that your employment will continue after academy graduation and passing the licensing exam,which would result in promotion to the Police Officer classification.

Police Academy begins: April 30, 2018
