ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR/DEPUTY CHIEF VISION OF IDEAL CANDIDATE MARCH 9, 2017

An Associate Director/Deputy Chief is a management position that requires proven leadership skills as identified by past assignments and successes. The individual must be seen as firm but also seen as very approachable. He or she must be a creative thinker, unbiased and able to understand the specific needs of the community they may be fortunate enough to serve. To be successful in the position one needs to be comfortable delegating responsibilities but, more importantly, granting the authority to another to accomplish delegated responsibilities or assigned tasks.


A qualified candidate for Associate Director/Deputy Chief should have had significant experience in overseeing, directing, planning and controlling the activities of a law enforcement agency whether in a municipal or campus environment, preferably both.

Candidates for our management position should display an openness and commitment to diversity and should have a track record of treating people of racial, ethnic and socioeconomic differences with fairness.

A candidate for this management position should not only display the successful managerial traits of leadership and adaptability but also have emphasized personal growth. This position requires several minimum job qualifications in that area, such as:

Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or a related field. (Master’s Degree preferred) 


Graduate of an advanced Police Executive Development Program. 


Graduate of a full-time municipal police training academy recognized by the Municipal Police 
Training Committee. 


Possess 5-7 years of police management command experience at the rank of Lieutenant or higher. 


Knowledge of administrative procedures, budget preparation and management practices, and experience in developing rules, regulations, policies and procedures. 


Knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations, and the skills to apply them. 


Demonstrated capacity to develop and foster effective working relationships with individuals and 
organizations reflecting a broad range of identities, perspectives and experiences. 


Working knowledge of the Clery Act and Title IX as they apply to institutions of higher education. 


Lastly, the ideal candidate should be committed to working closely with all departments at Berklee to ensure the safety, security and well-being of all members of the Berklee Community.
