Swarthmore College seeks a qualified Associate Director of Public Safety to assist the Director in establishing and maintaining a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, the Associate Director works very closely with a variety of campus offices, such as Dean of Students and the Dean’s staff, Facilities & Services and off-campus resources, and assists the Director in administering all safety and security operations including emergency management in an effective  and sensitive manner and overseeing campus security patrol, communications center, incident investigation, crime prevention, parking enforcement, shuttle service, and college ID card program.  

Requirements:
  • Evidence of energy and commitment, goal-oriented thinking, and strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, ability to communicate complex information clearly, accurately and credibly to a wide range of audiences, both in person and in writing. 
  • Ability to relate to a diverse student and employee population, understand the needs and issues of a college campus community, and appreciate the Department’s commitment to service and role in the educational process. 
  • Superior interpersonal and leadership skills.  A collaborative spirit, a talent for listening, and a respect for the individual, all of which are highly valued in an environment strongly influenced by shared values and practices. 
  • CPR, Basic First Aid and AED certifications 
  • Valid driver’s license. Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred. 
  • ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and/or Physical Security Professional (PSP) designations strongly desired.  
  • 5 years of security or law enforcement experience in a college campus setting.  
  • 3 years of direct supervisory security or law enforcement experience in a college campus setting, associate/assistant director experience at a college preferred. 
  • Current working knowledge of Federal Jeanne Clery Act and PA Act 73 and other laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, and best practices pertinent to campus safety and security. 
  • Must be fully knowledgeable about Federal Title IX requirements; strong investigative background, particularly involving sexual misconduct.
