Washington,
DC—The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF)
today launched “Holiday Heroes,” a special campaign to honor the nation’s law
enforcement officers during the December holidays. The campaign is intended
both to remember those officers who have died in the line of duty serving the
community and to recognize the brave men and women who continue to serve in law
enforcement today.
Using a special website – www.LawMemorial.org/HolidayHero – citizens identify their
law enforcement “holiday hero” and make a donation to the NLEOMF, a
not-for-profit organization based in Washington, DC. The donations will help
the Memorial Fund in its work to honor fallen law enforcement officers,
research officer fatality trends and enhance officer safety.
The Memorial Fund will create a special “badge” for each holiday hero and place
them in the windows of its Visitors Center in downtown Washington, DC. The
badges will be displayed into January 2010, so that passersby can view them and
appreciate the service and sacrifice of American law enforcement. Holiday
heroes will also be recognized on the NLEOMF website.
“Throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season, law enforcement
officers are required to forego time with their own families so the rest of us
can safely spend time with ours. Tragically, some of our officers are injured
or killed during this season of peace,” said NLEOMF Chairman Craig W. Floyd.
“Our Holiday Heroes program gives grateful citizens an opportunity to publicly
express their appreciation and support for our officers – those who have fallen
and those who continue to serve, putting their lives on the line for the safety
and protection of others,” he added.
