Educating the community about the effects of domestic violence is something
Family Rescue is passionate about because education is a crucial aspect of
breaking the cycle of domestic violence. On October 28, 2009 the National
Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), Chicago Metropolitan Chapter in conjunction with
Family Rescue will host “A Call to Action: South Side Communities Address
Domestic Violence”. This will be a candid discussion about domestic
violence in our communities and how we can respond positively to prevent,
intervene and support survivors.
There will be three breakout sessions. The first is entitled, Know
Yourself, Respect Yourself. This will be a discussion about dating
violence and healthy relationship building skills for teenage girls and young
women. This session will include a variety of interactive role plays and
discussions. The second breakout session will be a panel discussion entitled, How
A Real Man Responds: Men Endorsing Nonviolence. It will focus on how
men can talk to other men and boys about expressing feelings and solving
problems in relationships without using violence. The third breakout session is
entitled, Violence in the Pews and it will address a faith-based
response to domestic violence and the role of faith in a victim’s healing. This
session includes a video about faith and domestic violence and information
about a new training curriculum participants can use with their own faith
communities entitled “Responding to Domestic Violence: An Interfaith Guide to
Prevention & Intervention”.
Overall, this symposium will be a great way for the communities of
Chicago’s south side to
come together as a unified voice and speak out against domestic violence.
Service Learning Hours will be offered to high school students who
attend. Light food and beverage will be provided.
