The Smithsonian has two types of employees; Federal–paid through
Congressional appropriations and Trust–paid through revenues generated
by our business enterprises and other non- government funding sources.
Trust employees are “private sector” employees and have their own
comprehensive benefit program

A Federal employee who accepts a Trust position must resign from
Federal service. Federal retirement payments are not affected by Trust
employment

Under direct supervision, enforces local, state, and federal laws and
ensures compliance with University policies. Provides security for
personnel, real property, and equipment. Investigates and documents
crimes/incidents, documents and preserves evidence, and provides legal
testimony. May be assigned to any shift; may perform campus patrol or
serve as substation officer, victim/witness assistance, or crime
prevention officer.

The Police Captain reports to the Police Chief who oversees all police
services for the City and the regional 9-1-1 center. The Police
Department employs about 190 sworn police officers and 120 civilian
employees who provide a variety of police services.
